So much true!. With the advancement of technology and services all shrunk into a single tiny device. Its like carrying your entire office workload where ever you go. Well it comes, to my question , “How much do we work? and why do we work so much?”.
Im an extreme workaholic , but somehow after my marriage , i managed to lower down my working time from 20 hours a day to 16 hours a day, trying to give time to my family. i dont own a blackberry, and never will. But with the other advancements like Sony Ericsson P910, a wifi’ed home, my laptop with me everywhere…. its difficult to hide from work. It not that im lazy or scared to work, but keeping a timeline of my life , i realised i have spent 75% of last years working, with the balance 25% spent on my childhood,Education and my family.
Coming back to my question “How much do we work? and why do we work so much” . According to the human body it can handle a day to day working environment of around maximum 12 hours (discovery). But to carry out to this, we need to have multiple breaks.  New Advancements in technology, makes us work more than this allocated hours. It eats up into our family life, lesuire time, relaxation time.
Things like Blackberry servcies, GPRS, Wimax etc makes us work on the move! wherever we are . Well companies may look at this as a major improvement that employees can take their work everywhere. But the system must not be abused! . Employees shouldnt be tracked down at home to carry out tasks, etc. If work must be distributed during off hours. Then shifts must be create… (well thats another business story)
About” why do we work much?” .. ok, this could be “to survive”, “to makes lots of money”, “to enjoy work?” , or becoz “Boss Says so!” . I, personally enjoy working , it keeps me in the fullest of thought, creativity etc. But i learnt i have lost a major part of life. The Part of socialisation , the part of enjoyment, the part of lesiure and relaxation.
AÂ friend once put it to me, Ray, when you grow old, would you look back and say “You only worked and never got to enjoy life?”, “You never tasted this burger, or went for a movie?” …… it had a thought to be pondered over.
So the next time , a new device comes out to the market, i always think … “Will, this make me work more than the 16 hours i already put?”
Hmmmm the boss always haunts you down with the Blackberry that’s true. Stay away from it.
But seriously I’d say that the company that you work for/ the bossman needs to respect that you have a life and give you your space and not treat you like their robot.
