KD 6000 reward to design coconut plucking machine!

Submitted by rayboy on August 26, 2009 – 7:08 am8 Comments

Certain States in India have joined together to come up with this reward for anyone, any local or international organisation to come up with a machinery that will pluck out coconuts.

The Report says “Padelis to bring down coconuts from their tall palms are in short supply not just in Goa. Kerala is facing an even greater problem finding coconut pluckers. A falling birth rate, high rates of migration and rising school attendance has led to a lack of young men willing to make the dangerous climb up the towering coconut palms in Kerala, the most productive of the coconut-producing states in India. They are opting for safer, less arduous and more ‘prestigious’ professions.”

Other notes include “The winning machine must be operated from the ground, must be capable of gathering nuts at heights of 30 metres and must be able to trim palm fronds and clean the bushy head of the tree to prevent disease. It will also have to be cheap to build and run, and be robust and easy to transport.”

So Any takers?

There are plenty of cranes in Dubai collecting dust. Take the lot of them to Goa and Kerala and put them to some good use plucking coconuts!

Just back from Goa……most of the fertile land converted to real estate….guess best for now will be to reward for inventing a machine to plant trees…..so our next generation can invent coconut plucking macine.

Should’t they just genetically modify those trees to not get so darn tall – sort of like a bonsai thingy??

    LOL @ purple ! thats a good suggestion !
problem in Kerala is that most of them are in the Middle East now so theres a shortage of tree climbers :)

Eureka!! I’ve designed a versatile coconut/betelnut/oil palm nut plucking device that is viable, relatively inexpensive, easy to operate from groundlevel and need not climb a tree for plucking nuts and palm fronds. The device is safe to use and could possibly handle even 40m (120ft.) tall palms. The device can be taken to coconut groves and will be able to handle trees far quicker than a human climber, thus saving much time & effort. The trees can also be nursed, dressed and treated with pesticide if desired. The design is currently at the drawingboard stage. Villagers will surely be able to afford it. Right now, I am away on vacation in Dubai and will be back home in Goa around mid-May 2010. Interested parties worldwide may please contact me at lumagoa@dataone.in or call
    +919822126240 after 15th May 2010.
    Regards, John L. de Sa.
