For Those catholics getting married in kuwait or going out of kuwait to get married. i decided to repost this , as it may come in handy..
Well… i had thought this was going to be easy . But it had equal run about as compared to the other legal formalties..
Both Zita and Myself , we did our Marriage Formation course in Kuwait . The Requirement of a Marriage Course is that it should be done as close to the wedding Date. So ours was in August(4 months before the wedding). Somehow, we both felt that we needed a more better approach in gaining the knowledge behind the marriage course. So we re did the course in Goa just 2 weeks before the wedding date…
For those who are doing the marriage course in Kuwait - its Best to contact the Holy Family cathedral or check its website : www.catholic-church.org/kuwait and those in Goa for the Family Centre in Margao(Holy Spirit Church) or check their Website : www.familyservicecentregoa.org
This will Issue you a certificate which says “Marriage Course Attendance Certificate”. The Course in Goa gives you alot of insight and knowledge in “being” Married, etc.
I was born and brought up in Kuwait. So i had to collect my “RECENT” baptism certificate from Kuwait, which should also mention about the “Confirmation” Date and For Zita she had done her Confirmation here in Kuwait , So she had to collect her Baptism Certificate from Goa and the Confirmation Certificate from Kuwait.
we also had to get the Certificate of “Freedom of State” (which is required in Goa) , to prove that we were not earlier married . and we have to get 2 witnesses each to prove it. So Fr. Domnic in Kuwait did the needful amidst alots of questions.
In Goa. The Church Requires that both the groom and Bride be physically Present atleast for minimum 3 Sundays .. for the Banns to be annouced… Well For Zita it was Fine. But for me i had only 2 sundays after Convincing, and Convincing and Convincing the Village Priest.
The Priest Required the Following Documents From Me (Groom)
1. Baptism Certificate from Kuwait ( Confirmation Date should be mentioned)
2. Freedom of State from Kuwait
3. Birth Certificate - Copy
4. Certificate of Age / and Consent to Marry
5. Marriage Course Attendance Certificate
The Priest Required the Following Documents From Zita (Bride)
1. Baptism Certificate from Goa (Since she was baptised in Goa)
2. Confirmation Certificate in Kuwait
3. Certificate of Age / and Consent to Marry
4. Freedom of State from Kuwait
5. Marriage Course Attendance Certificate
6. Letter from the Groom’s Parish Priest where the Nuptials are being held
Once you have these thigns .. the Groom / bride should go to their Respective parishes for Individual catechism teachings… Here .. the parish Priests mainly checks on your catechism like “i believe” - Rosary and few other things. So try to study these thigns if you dont knowÂ

Thanks for the info ray!
I have to say, getting married is a very commercial thing all of a sudden with all those preparatory course, certificates and other hogwash. I thought it was commercial in terms of the wedding rings, the venue of the receptin but apparently the church wants to cash in on the festivities as well!
This kind of thing really disgusts me. I mean what’s the point in teaching people all those hymns and prayers if they’re not pure of heart? And do they think they can actually teach people to be good husbands and wives by making them attend a damn course? Makes me want tp puke. While I have a certain amount of respect for the catholic clergy, sometimes I think they go way overboard when it comes to authority. It is probably because they feel the waning of attention thanks to the media shining light on various other more serious issues.
Either way thanks for the info mate. Good on you!
Thanks for the info Ray!! Really helpful I must say.
How did you go about the civil marriage formalities?
However, I do not agree all this is hogwash Barry..its rather informative (from what I’ve heard through all friends who’ve attended the course so far), espectially the course in Goa. We should be more “appreciative” of what the Church is trying to do..but its easier being a critic.
NO, you cannot MAKE people ‘pure of heart’ nor ‘good husbands or wives’..but you CAN ADVISE them HOW to be..and hope they are sensible enough to listen and follow it. The Church aims at ‘guiding’ and ‘educating’ newly married couples, those attending with an open mind will find alot more to learn than those with closed minds. Peace be with you.
