I have stopped using Windows File Explorer i think about 7 years now. Ever since i found its replacement , called Total Commander from www.ghisler.org .

This Windows utility makes the copying of files from any drive and any folder to any other location much easier. It uses a split screen approach that Windows Explorer desperately needs. You choose one directory on the left and another on the right. (See screenshot at the end of this article.) You right click on any file you want to copy (or move) and see it turn red. Once you’ve selected all the files you want to copy, you hit the copy command and the program copies everything where you want it. Simple and easy.

The program also lets you select files with wildcards. For example, if I had wanted to select all my Excel files you see in the illustration below, I could have hit the Plus key and then typed in “*.xls.” One of my favorite features is its personalized file selection filters.

Some users may be put off by Total Commander’s somewhat unorthodox Windows interface. For example, its Help menu is flush right, far away from the other menus. For a while, I didn’t realize it was there. Its right-click file selection method differs from the standard Ctrl+Click Windows method, but it didn’t take me long to get used to this difference. (You can change to the Windows standard in the Configuration menu if you can’t get used to the change.)

I’m pleased for the most part with the program’s FTP capabilities, which allow you to upload and download files to and from your web page. I’ve used WS_FTP for years for this purpose and felt the normal resistance to learning anything different. However, after trying out Total Commander’s FTP features, I’ve realized that its the best software for all my FTP needs.

I have to admit I was baffled by Total Commander’s “Multi-Rename Tool,” but I may warm up to it after I read more about it in its help files. It appears to be powerful, but I had a hard time muddling through this feature.

Another thing i noticed is that Total Commander run on its own CPU process and memory thread, thus the possibility of getting hung due to windows process are closed to nil.With an Integrated Zip Packer, Thumbnail Viewer and so many other features im yet to reckon with . its truly the best File Management Utility for the Windows platform.
